What’s Your Hardiness Level?

The holidays are upon us. For some, this can be a very stressful time of year. For others, well, they are taking advantage of what’s left of their PTO bank and relaxing and enjoying the season. Do you ever wonder why a stressful experience impacts people differently? Or wonder why people respond differently to stressful experiences?

Here’s my last leadership tip for the year.

This has something to do with their hardiness level. Hardiness is a generalized mode of functioning that influences how people interpret the world and make sense of their experiences. People’s hardiness levels determine how they react and respond to stressful and unexpected situations.

Three components make up your hardiness level:

 CHALLENGE

Seeing change and novelty as exciting and as an opportunity for learning and growth

CONTROL

Having a sense of self-efficacy and the belief that you can influence outcomes in your life

COMMITMENT

Being engaged and seeing most parts of your life as interesting and meaningful

Each of these components of hardiness facilitates a flexible, confident, and passionate approach to life, ensuring a strong degree of resilience when responding to a range of stressful conditions.

As you close out this year, I hope your hardiness level is high!

You know my journey this year, it’s been a year of reflection, restoration and flexing my resiliency.

I am so thankful for each of you who continue to read my story and leadership lessons. I can only share how I have lived them out.
